Floral militancy
In her cycle Floral Militancy, Ellen Semen stages a fascinating fusion of nature and the military. Huge, colorful blossoms and lush greenery dominate the scenery, where flora and fauna are depicted in a contradictory coexistence of war and coexistence. In the midst of this overwhelming nature, people, lovers and warriors meet in a constant interplay of protection, surveillance and hide-and-seek. Plants and trees appear not only as passive elements, but as active agents that act like a powerful, militant force: protecting, fighting and guarding. This idea combines the beauty and delicacy of flora with the severity and discipline of the military. Semen invites us to see the floral world as a militant force that can offer both destruction and protection, and thus to view the fragile balance of life in a new light.
