Beautifully disconcerting

Autor: Mag. Simone Christl am - Auszüge von einem Text von

...Ellen Semen sends viewers of her pictures and collages on a search for beauty. She goes back to the Biedermeier period and adds strange set pieces to landscapes and portraits by painters such as Waldmüller, Kaulbach and Fendi, which truly question our viewing habits.

...Ellen Semen often creates "disconcerting" images, her unusual hybrid creatures not fitting into a familiar world. In idealized landscapes that we know from the Biedermeier period, aliens or anachronistic objects such as modern electrical appliances suddenly appear. Strange figures with masks appear in portraits that are based on Dannhauser's cute figures, for example.
