More than just well-painted flowers and blossoms

...The works of painter Ellen Semen, who has roots in Croatia, fall outside the scope of these approaches to the theme of flowers and blossoms. Although she speaks "through the flower", she does so with sharpness and clarity. In her paintings, created in the naïve tradition of her homeland, soldiers hide in flowers and plants with a gun in their hands, while fearfully veiled women with only their eyes visible seek shelter in them. This painter's pictures are an indictment of war and at the same time a powerful plea for peace. The one of the woman with the rifle in her hand and the child in her arms symbolizes the situation and attitude of women just as vividly as that of the oversized "Madame Vomir", who spits at the small hooded man aiming at her.
